Charlie’s an angel

I’ve put off writing this for a while. Eight weeks, to be precise. Writing about it meant that it was real and that I had actually lost my best friend.

The amazing Charlie

As you are all probably aware, my gorgeous Charlie boy underwent surgery to have his leg removed after a bone cancer diagnosis. It was a shocking and horribly upsetting period for all of us.

I meant to update the blog on a more regular basis, detailing his recovery, but I have found the entire process very stressful and difficult to talk about. Following Charlie’s surgery, he didn’t eat very well. In fact, he went through probably about five or six days of barely eating anything – and believe me, we tried everything. His eyes started to sink into the bones around his face. The oncology specialist just couldn’t find anything physically wrong with him. My husband and I spent about two or three weeks sleeping on the floor next to him. It was the only way he would settle. And we had to be touching him! God forbid you moved your hand off his back! He would just get straight back up and start panting and pacing all over again.

Tripod Charlie

I don’t think anything can prepare you for it. The moment you’re told your dog, your best friend, has cancer. Deep down, I knew.

Charlie had been limping for a couple of weeks. He had been in our vets for xrays and nothing showed up so they put it down to a sprain. He was put on anti-inflammatories and painkillers in the hope that the limp would subside. It didn’t. I noticed one night that his leg was very swollen. It reminded me of a water balloon. If you’ve nothing nice to say!

I don’t know what’s happened over the last week or so, but strangers have felt the need to comment on a couple of the dogs I walk. These dogs were not misbehaving in any way but so far I have got a: “My dog walker refuses to walk dogs like that” and “Are they ok with other dogs? Even that one?” – when the one in question was excitedly wagging her tail and smiling at them.

Life is short

I know it’s a cliche but it’s true.

On Sunday night, I was scrolling through Facebook. I came across post upon post of status updates and memes from people dreading work the next day. “I can’t believe the weekend is over already.” “Not sure if I hate Mondays or Mondays hate me.” For the first time in my life, I can honestly say that I don’t feel like that.

Second hand animals make first class pets

I remember seeing this quote somewhere and thinking how perfectly it reflects my life and my animals.

My dogs have been through at least two different owners. My hamster, like my last two, previously had another home, as he was a rescue from Gumtree.

I finished my last blog saying that we are on a break from fostering. Many mocked, but I was adamant! Well, this girl had other ideas – meet Nyla!

If you love them, let them go…

The past week has been a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions as our lovely foster boy went to his forever home.

When my last foster boy, Chocky, was adopted after being with us for nine months, we wanted a break. My heart actually felt like it was slowly breaking when I handed him over to his new family and it hurt – despite knowing that this family was everything I had hoped for him.

Why Charlie’s Angels?

For those who don’t know me, Charlie’s Angels may sound like a strange name for a dog walking company? Well, maybe a little bit of background information will help it make some sense…
